New standards are being worked on all the time to enable more producers to come into the Fairtrade system and sell their goods into the growing Fairtrade market. Existing standards are also reviewed on an ongoing basis. The FLO standards unit oversees this work.
Consultation for both new standards work and review of existing standards is undertaken with all stakeholders within the Fairtrade system.
Fairtrade Africa provides an important link between certified or potential producers and the FLO Standards Unit.
- We submit requests on behalf of producers for the revision and development of standards and prices
- We aim to see new and unique products from Africa included in FLO’s scope of certification, including products which are indigenous to the continent
- As a commitment to existing certified producers we support the development of standards and prices for products which are complimentary to existing certified products. This enables producers to diversify into another Fairtrade product
- To foster South – South trade on Fairtrade terms, we assist in developing price requests for products which have a regional market interest
- In consulting on price and standard revision we aim to ensure prices and standards meet the needs of producers and are set at a level which adds value to products from Africa.
