Fairtrade Africa is a full member of FLO. Our members are all Africa-based Fairtrade certified producer organisations. There are also associate members who are involved in Fairtrade. The Members Meeting (MM) held every two years is the highest decision making body of the organisation. All members have the right to participate and vote through their regional representatives at the MM.
Board
The Fairtrade Africa Board is elected by members at the MM held every two years and includes:
- 1 representative from each regional network
- 1 elected member to represent Fairtrade Africa on the FLO Board
Fairtrade Africa is also represented on the FLO standards and certification committees and on the board of the UK Fairtrade Foundation.
Management
Fairtrade Africa activities are managed through various team leaders who form the Management Team based at the headquarters (Nairobi Office). As an international organisation, Fairtrade Africa engages local and international staff with diverse experience relevant for the implementation of our programmes.
Staff
Fairtrade Africa currently has nine full-time staff operating from different parts of Africa. The organisation is also working with a number of interns and volunteers who are supporting the delivery of Fairtrade Africa programmes and activities. Fairtrade Africa has five distinct teams:
- Membership Services: Our members are at the core of the organisation’s strategy and activities. Our membership services work, which includes our regional teams, focuse on delivery of efficient services to members to promote their activities and improve their capacity as well receiving their feedback to Fairtrade Africa management and Board to ensure effective strategy formulation within the organisation. This team is also responsible for supporting FLO standards development and review.
- Marketing and Communications: This team aims to increase public and business awareness and understanding of Fairtrade in Africa and support the development of South-South trade in Africa. Programmes of this team include campaign development, media relations and public relations.
- Policy and Advocacy: This team is responsible for research and policy development to effectively represent our members in FLO and in trade debates. The team also develops Fairtrade Africa’s advocacy policy and provides support for monitoring and evaluating our initiatives.
- Partnerships and Fundraising: Our partnerships and fundraising work focuses on Fairtrade Africa partnerships and project development. The team is involved in the development and implementation of different strategic partnership approaches which will further shape Fairtrade Africa as a regional network and development organisation.
- Administration and Finance: This team takes charge of the day-to-day management of the organisation including human resources and finance. It is also responsible for managing the governance function of the organisation including the Members Meeting and meetings of the Board.
